The bus finally reaches the Kimberley Region hours later. Bidding the old man goodbye, you watch him stroll away into the bush. With Winston perched comfortably on your shoulder, you make your way to the nearest visitor center. There you meet a group of friendly tourists.
“G’day!” you say, feeling confident in your new found Australian ways, as you approach a young man and woman.
“Oh, hello,” the young lady says, and you realize she is not speaking with an Australian accent. “Are you lost?”
“Not exactly,” you say, “ we’ve just arrived here and we’re looking for something fun to do.”
“Well, we’re going fishing in one of the desert streams,” she says.
“Yeah, we’re going after some barramundi!” her companion adds. “It’s the most famous game fish in these parts.”
“That sounds like fun,” you say, and imagine how relaxing it would be to camp by a cool river running through the rocky landscape. Winston bows his head and raises his red and yellow crest in approval.
You join the tour group, and ride out in a four-wheel drive vehicle into the outback, and spend a relaxing time camping, fishing, and telling stories as you take in the desert scenery. You look forward to telling everyone back home about your unexpected vacation.
