“Sorry Sunny, but I have to do the responsible thing here. I can’t just let you go,” you explain.
“You don’t need to let me go. It doesn’t have to be up to you. Just undo the latch on the cage and I will take care of the rest,” Sunny says.
“I would still be responsible for letting you out of the cage, and I’m not ready or willing to take on that responsibility,” you tell Sunny.
“El Dorado, is my home and I wanted to take you there” Sunny says, and seems to frown.
“I wanted to take you to my home, too, but I am starting to realize that owning a pet isn’t just about what I want. I always heard that having a pet is a huge responsibility, yet knowing that you want to go somewhere else makes me wonder if I am ready for that,” you say.
The two of you stare at each other for awhile. You are interrupted by the pet shop owner.
He asks, “So do you want to take that bird home?”
“Yeah, I do.”
“Great,” he exclaims.
“But I don’t think that she wants to go home with me,” you tell him.
“Ok, I’ll put her back then,” he says.
You watch as Sunny’s cage is put back where you found her. You decide to watch her for awhile from around the corner. She quickly goes back to singing and playing with the other birds. As you leave the pet shop, you wonder if this experience will forever change your desire to own a pet.
